1st year Med Student: What do I keep in my backpack?

Hello again!

This week I decided I would dive into my backpack and show ya’ll what I carry around with me. I definitely have some essentials that I always need and count on while I’m at school or at a coffee shop studying.

In hindsight, this would probably be a better idea for a video, but lord knows I don’t have the brain cells left to learn how to film/edit/navigate youtube right now. This post will be pretty short (shocker, I know).

Essentials:
  • Pencils, pens, highlighters. I always make sure I have enough of these. I need pencils for taking notes during tests (can’t have pens), but I prefer to take notes in pen.
  • Sticky notes. I have lined ones and page markers. I use them for a range of things, mostly for taking notes or making a list.
  • Colored pencils. I used this to draw/color for every anatomy course. Whether I drew everything out myself or used the pre-made coloring sheets student services put out on the cookie bar for us.
  • Expo markers. Even though the school should have them in every room with a white board and with every white board, a lot go missing, people move them to different rooms, or move them around campus to different spots. I had my own in case I couldn’t find any in the spot I was at OR none of them worked.
  • Headphones, iPad charger/computer charger, keyboard charger. I had all these cords with me in case I needed them. I have both my standard iPad & iPhone headphones in my backpack at all times.
  • Wallet, keys, lotion. Again, I need the wallet and keys. Why carry a purse when I’m already carrying a backpack? And the lotion, well my hands get super dry. Plus its nice to always have some on hand when I need it!
  • Ipad or laptop. Depending on what block I’m in or how I want to take notes will depend on which one I take.
  • Notebook/legal pad. I always find that I need paper when I don’t have it…
  • Electronic cleaning wipes. I have these little packets that I can use to wipe down all the screens/electronics that I have.
  • Lady Essentials. Ya know, cuz I’m a lady and you never know when that shit is gunna happen.

Situational Objects:
  • Which book I am using. I usually have the 1 or 2 books I need on me (or access through my iPad but that doesn’t really count lol)
  • Book stand. Again, depends on if I’m carrying books and how big they are/how often I have been needing them.
  • Noise cancelling headphones. I really like using these, but don’t always remember to bring them. It took me the longest time to learn to sync these headphones to my computer, so I couldn’t watch lectures with them. It is hit or miss on if they work.
  • Stylus. I’m hit or miss on this one. When I want to draw on my iPad I will use it. But I really mostly only used it for near. But I know classmates who use theirs religiously.

And that is basically it! For the most part this is what I’ve needed throughout the year and majority of this stays in my backpack. Hopefully this helps you with some insight on what to carry around with you.
